SIOP Interaction Kits

 Is your school looking for ways to create more opportunities for student interaction and oral language across content areas? Have you been SIOP-trained and you're looking for more tools to support component number 5 (interaction)? Take a peek at this tool kit you may wish to compile to support your work! 

The link will take you to a page with a listing of potential tools you may wish to include, along with a photo and a link to purchase. There is also a column on the left that describes some ways in which you might use the tool in your classroom. 

As you slowly try out and introduce tools to students, co-construct and establish norms for using the tools, like a t-chart of Ways We Can Use this Tool to Help Us Learn vs. Ways We Wouldn't Use this Tool To Help Us Learn. I like paying attention to labels like this instead of Correct vs. Incorrect labels.  Having students join you in creating the norms is a great way for students to see how much we trust and value their ideas.

If you are a coach or a coordinator, I might suggest compiling these tools for educators you serve and adhere a QR code to the container of tools (see image below), or you could also create short videos describing the tool, as I have done here.



 Highlight the ways that teammates are using the tools and create a bank of videos of the tools in action, or reflection videos of how the tools have been used. These can be housed in a shared Google Drive or on a team Padlet. 


Toolkits like these can provide everything at an educators' fingertips to support the rollout of SIOP implementation!

"I Need" Cards: Printables for Newcomers

At the beginning of the school year, I always encourage folks to prep a ton of these in anticipation of newcomer students that will arrive throughout the school year. Please note that this is one example of a template. You can open the templates, go to FILE and MAKE A COPY so that you can customize these to better fit your needs! This sample template I have ready is for English/Spanish newcomers . I Need Cards - please note that this template has the same tool but presented a few different ways. These are a tool that I reference in my proficiency snapshot tool for classoom & content teachers (a scaffold I'd recommend for level 1 students). As students are beginning their language journeys in English, they may just feel comfortable raising their hand and pointing. TableTop Tools (Inspired by TikTok)

Create mini anchor charts and display them on small hanging rings. I first saw this idea from  TikTok user @teachwithheath_ . I love how these look and also how easy it is have multiple tools ready for students! I'm thinking this would be great for each content area, for example, so that all of the math tools for that unit are available to students in one spot.  Check out my first round of design . Please go to File and Make a Copy so that you can tweak these to fit your needs! I included specific sentence stems/frames for collaboration. These are laid out so that each page has two of the same, so that you could print two tools at a time. The size is set to match the Party City frames (these were only $2.50 each, but I'm sure local dollar stores have something similar).
