Social Media Trend: Unfortunately I Do Love...

For students in 6-12 especially, we know they spend a lot of time consuming content online. I love bringing social media trends into the classroom in low-lift ways. There's a current TikTok trend that I could see having some value in our classrooms for building a sense of community, bonding, and getting to know each other (plus lots of languaging happening here as well! WOOT WOOT!).

For us grownups reading this blog, check out the full breakdown on this trend by reading this blog post by Cosmopolitan. It's got a few samples for you as well. Again - that's a blog post for grown ups, not for our students - lol don't come at me.

Now let's see how we might do one for ourselves. I'll start!

"Unfortunately, I do love...

Wearing bright pink everywhere I go.

Surrounding myself in neon colors no matter what the season.

Stopping at 7brew for a very sugary caffeine-heavy pick-me-up.

Filling up shopping carts at online retailers then closing the screen.

Laughing louder than is probably necessary."

What would yours say? Make yours and share your own sample with your students. With something like Canva or even Google Docs, students can select a random background to their slide/page that catches their vibes that day, then lay the text over their image.

Here is a SUPER BARE BONES example template in Google Slides. Go to File & Make a Copy to add more! Take a peek at some of the empty samples that include a skate park, swimming pool, soccer field, beach scenes, sunset skies, mountain views, and more!

I'm so curious to hear what our students might come up with, and how they can share something about themselves with each other in a low-stakes, high engagement way! Perhaps this becomes a shared classroom slide deck, or a printable that goes on the wall for a Curriculum Night capture - ORRRR perhaps you do this later on as you're all learning about historical figures, characters in a novel, inventors or scientists or civil rights leaders - and have students imagine what they might share based on their new knowledge of that person!
